Unexpected Weather Challenges On The Wedding Day

Dancing in the Rain: A Wedding Day Tale of Adaptation and Joy

It was a warm July 8th day in 2023 when Brittany and Dan embarked on their dream wedding journey. The backdrop for their celebration was the charming city of Bay City, Michigan, with plans for an enchanting outdoor ceremony along the riverfront, with the reception planned for an outdoor rooftop reception. Little did we know that Mother Nature had a different plan for the day. A slight drizzle quickly escalated, challenging our resolve as wedding photographers. In the face of unexpected rain, we found ourselves pivoting to keep the magic alive.

The Morning Preparations: The day started at a cozy Air BnB in Bay City, filled with the bustling excitement of preparations. The slight drizzle seemed inconsequential, and the forecast hinted at only a 30% chance of rain. Undeterred, we kicked off the 8-hour wedding day with the usual routine of bride and groom photos, capturing the joy and the anticipation to just create beautiful images for the wedding day.

The Unexpected Twist: As the day unfolded, so did the intensity of the rain. The original plan for the outdoor riverfront ceremony now seemed like a distant dream. However, the show must go on, and as wedding photographers, we were faced with a challenge that demanded quick thinking and creative solutions.

Adapting to the Elements: With the rain pouring down, we had to make swift adjustments to salvage the day. The indoor setting became our new canvas. Here's how we navigated the unexpected twists:

Embracing Spontaneity

In the spirit of spontaneity, we embraced the rain as an unexpected guest at the celebration. The droplets became a natural and romantic backdrop for some of the most memorable shots. But we have also done the research and investment in the proper equipment to work in adverse elements. We love shooting with Canon, they ensure their camera gear is weather-sealed and resistant to moisture. But we don’t stop there, for every wedding we are sure to bring rain covers for your cameras and lenses. This helps in protecting our equipment and allows us to confidently shoot in light rain without worrying about potential damage. In Brittany and Dan’s case they saw it was best to move the ceremony & reception indoors.

Scouting For Unique Indoor Opportunities

While the rain continued outside, we scouted the Air BnB for unique indoor opportunities that could mirror the charm of the original outdoor setting. Every nook and corner became an opportunity to create magic. When shooting indoors you want to use any available natural light: Rainy days often provide soft, diffused light that can be flattering for photography. So try to take advantage of the natural light, even if it means shooting under overhangs or near windows.

I Repeat Leverage Natural Light

With the outdoor ceremony moved indoors, we strategically used available natural light to maintain the warm and intimate ambiance that Brittany and Dan had envisioned for their wedding day. Work with the couple and the venue to identify indoor spaces that can be used as backup locations (luckily Dan & Brittany had this all taken care of) for key moments like the ceremony. Having a plan in place will help the day run smoothly despite the weather. But also remember that you are there to help relieve stress from the bride and groom. Be their reassurance and do what you can as the photographer to ensure that their wedding photos will still be a great moment to relive.

Keep A Positive Attitude

Rain or shine, the wedding day will go on, and so do your best to capture beautiful moments. Be sure to grab as many candid shots, to capture the genuine emotions of the day, making the unexpected rain a part of the couple's unique love story. Keep the mood positive and encourage the couple to embrace the rain as a special and unique element of their wedding day. A positive attitude can lead to genuine and joyful expressions, resulting in memorable and authentic photographs.

Some Moments May Call For Mocked Moments

As wedding photographers, our ability to adapt to unforeseen challenges became a testament to our commitment to creating lasting memories. The rain may have altered the original script, but it couldn't dampen the spirits of Brittany and Dan. If you run into a wedding day, that is met with challenging weather on your clients wedding day, filled with unexpected twists and turns. I hope after reading this, you will feel encouraged to let your clients know even on a rainy wedding day it was still a celebration of love, adaptability, and the beauty of embracing life's surprises. If the schedule allows and before the sun sets, possibly plan for mocked photos, where you can still create the vision they once had.

Sometime The Sun Does Come Out After The Rain

In a twist of fate, luck smiled upon Brittany and Dan on their wedding day. As the raindrops gracefully tapered off, a window of opportunity emerged. As wedding photographers, we have to take advantage of every chance we have to shoot in favorable conditions. The once rain-soaked plans gave way, the sunshine finally breaking through the clouds. With joy in their hearts, the bride and groom stepped outside with their bridal party, their smiles reflecting the warmth of the sun that had conquered the rain. Its a testament to the unpredictable dance of weather and the beauty that arises when luck decides to be on our side. Moments happen fast, so as the photographer, don’t hesitate to take the lead and ask your clients if they’re comfortable heading outside.

Navigate The Weather, The Bride Will Thank You For It

In the world of capturing love stories, remember that weather, like love, is beautifully unpredictable. Don't let the fear of inclement weather dampen your passion for Wedding Photography.
